“Several people are burried under landslides, many are still missing. There was no need for grand events. People don’t celebrate even festivals for years If there is a tragedy or death at their places but here grams comedy shows are being organised as a part of silver jubilee celebration by the government. Have we lost our sensitivity. Can’t we celebrate Silver Jubilee with simplicity” said leader of the oppostion in the state assembly Yashpal Araya during late evening discussion on state’s 25 years journey in the special session of Uttarakhand legislature.

Arya alleged that disaster victims of this monsoon are still waiting for compensation from the state government but government is enjoying Silver Jubilee celebrations.

“In Tharali, disaster victims are still mourning the loss of their family members who were buried under the debris in their own houses. The bodies of the deceased victims are yet to be recovered from the debris. Neither have they received any compensation” said leader of the opposition in the house.

He further criticised the government alleging “state has been witnessing steep rise in its debt from 40,000 crore in 2017 to more than one lakh crore in 2025. Revenue rise in the state exchequer has come down from 19 percent in 2016-2017 to eight percent in 2025 while per capita is stagnant for the past 5-6 years and unemployment is skyrocketing.” Denouncing silver jubilee celebrations of the state further Arya further alleged “more than 1200 villages in Uttarakhand are vacant today owing to massive migration from the hills. Although we have State Migration Commission but there is no policy to check mass migration from rural hill villages.”

Discussion on 25 years growth of the state was still going on as replies to the allegations made by opposition was still awaited from the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and other members of treasury benches were still awaited.
